Twitter’s origins lie in a “daylong brainstorming session” held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Jack Dorsey , then an undergraduate student at New York University , introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The decision was also partly due to the fact that the domain twitter.
The definition was ‘a short burst of inconsequential information,’ and ‘chirps from birds’. And that’s exactly what the product was. With Twitter, it wasn’t clear what it was. They called it a social network, they called it microblogging, but it was hard to define, because it didn’t replace anything. There was this path of discovery with something like that, where over time you figure out what it is.
Twitter actually changed from what we thought it was in the beginning, which we described as status updates and a social utility. It is that, in part, but the insight we eventually came to was Twitter was really more of an information network than it is a social network. Panelists and speakers mentioned the service, and the bloggers in attendance touted it.
Social software researcher danah boyd said Twitter was “owning” the conference. And we just did! Creamer on January 22,

Her parents were married in an Episcopal church in Greenwich Village. In , her father, who was a sports writer devoted to horse racing, took a position with a newspaper in San Francisco. The family lived in Oakland, California , until the San Francisco Earthquake of destroyed the newspaper’s facilities, and her father lost his job. From the spontaneous response to the earthquake’s devastation, the self-sacrifice of neighbors in a time of crisis, Day drew a lesson about individual action and Christian community.

Wanashee On Monday morning, I attended the kick-off briefing for a scientific study beginning this month to analyze acid mine drainage into the Robinson Run Creek and its tributaries. In the early part of the s, the area was heavily mined for coal — and the present-day orange-ish waters flowing in the creek bear witness to that legacy. It’s an area I know well — many of my childhood and teenage years were spent growing up in Primrose. Staying out of “the crick” was a common admonition from my mother, who still lives there today.
Her long backyard ends at the creek and she’s cautious to keep her dogs out of it. Chartiers Creek flows to the Ohio River. After this study is completed in the next year, the real work will begin for the Wanashee Conservancy — finding the funding to remediate the sources of the acid mine drainage. Hopefully these monies will come from both government and private sources.
If elected to the PA House on November 7, I would be an active partner for projects like this in the 46th District and an advocate for them throughout Pennsylvania. No one should have an orange-ish creek in their backyard.

DVDVerified Purchase Mike Leigh’s first feature is certainly embryonic but equally it perhaps wears his chief fascinations social clumsiness, the trivialities of human behaviour, self-importance and conceit, frustration and desperation and how we perceive each other and ourselves far more clearly on its sleeve than some of his later work. There’s little interest in polish here though Bahram Manoocherhi’s cinematography is wonderful as Leigh explores the ponderous and awkwardness between his protagonists head on.
Ricky Gervais would later extol and practice the virtues of embarrassing human behaviour as a source of comedy to great mainstream success; getting on film situations that the cringing viewer may only be able to stomach via a hand over the eyes or a slightly averted gaze, but here is proof that Leigh had beaten him to it. Bleak Moments is utterly uncompromising in its mumbling mordant depiction of social awkwardness and gaffes and in the bold move of getting the reality of facial twitches, clearing of the throat, hand wringing and almost kisses onto the screen.
It’s a fine line between watching excruciating interplay and the product actually being excruciating to watch but Leigh just about manages this tight rope well, dazzlingly well when one considers this is his first film. It’s certainly bleak, but it is equally not without hope too, simply because of the obvious resilience of spirit at the film’s centre.

Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball tour moved the work of designer Es Devlin, below, from pub theatre to huge arenas. Nick Ponty When Lady Gaga embarked on the early stages of her Monster Ball tour in , it marked the provocative pop princess’s crossover into the major league, with a spectacular show described by some as the first ever pop electro opera. This evening, I attended an interesting panel discussion at the Museum of the City of New York on the topic: The event was held in conjunction with the museum’s special exhibit ” Catholics in New York – I give the museum a great deal of credit for bringing together a panel that bridged what could perhaps be called the liberal – conservative divide in American Catholicsm: Baumann and Steinfels being leading liberal or “progressive” Catholics and Neuhaus and Marlin being noted “conservative” Catholics.
I say this while acknowledging that these labels are neither helpful nor accurate in all contexts. The panelists agreed that Anti-Catholicism is not dead but certainly less a presence in American life than it was during the era of the Know Nothing Party or even the Presidential Election. They explored the roots of Anti-Catholicism in the United States that stem from the religious wars and philosophical debates of Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.
The panelists also discussed the clerical sexual abuse scandal and its impact on how Americans view Catholicism today.
